Can a 3D model be the single source of truth? Yes! Is this easy to accomplish? No, no it’s not. Dedicated organizational effort and coordination are required for the model to eventually take the top spot on the podium as the authoritative source of product definition. Model-Based Definition (MBD) is going for the gold!
Model-Based Definition: 3D model* that includes associative product and manufacturing information (PMI), that define the product in a manner that can be used effectively without a drawing graphic sheet*.
*Model and drawing graphic sheet defined in ASME Y14 series.

Since 2011, Raytheon Company has been working toward 3D models overtaking 2D drawings for first place as the single source of truth. Raytheon is a technology and innovation leader specializing in defense, civil government, and cybersecurity solutions. Founded in 1922, Raytheon provides state-of-the-art electronics, mission systems integration, sensing, effects, mission support services, and capabilities in command, control, communications, computing, cyber, and intelligence (C5I).
William Cockrell, Sr. Principal Technical Support Engineer at Raytheon Missile Systems, will present at the 3D Collaboration and Interoperability Congress (3D CIC) about the transition to MBD on multiple production programs at Raytheon Missile Systems. 3D CIC will be held in Golden, Colorado on October 25 & 26, 2016.
Presentation Title: Raytheon’s Transition to MBD on Production Programs
Abstract: 2D drawings have been used for hundreds of years to design and build mechanical components and assemblies. For over two decades, engineers and designers have been using Computer Aided Design to develop 3D models to improve designs and are now expected to supply these models to suppliers to build product. The drawing has continued to be the source of truth, but industry is transitioning to the model containing all the intelligence for manufacturing and inspection. Raytheon has been working to support this transition since 2011, and Missile Systems (RMS) has accelerated this transition within our business. Raytheon presented in June of 2015 at the PTC Live Global conference on the path they were taking to complete this undertaking. We will be providing an update to our efforts and how we have transitioned to MBD on multiple production programs at RMS.
About the Presenter: William Cockrell is the Model Based Definition (MBD) champion at Raytheon Missile Systems (RMS) in Tucson, AZ. He is a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the Raytheon MBD enterprise team. Mr. Cockrell has been leading the engineering transition to MBD for over three years through the development of enterprise standards, processes, configuration, and training to support pilots and program adoption at RMS. He is a voting member on ASME Y14.41 and Y14.47 and is a member of the working group that formerly supported the PTC Model Centric Technical Committee (TC).
