We’re bringing shipbuilding to the Rocky Mountains! The discussion about the digital shipbuilding environment, that is. Newport News Shipbuilding is the sole designer, builder, and refueler of U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and one of two providers of U.S. Navy submarines. Newport News Shipbuilding has been building ships for 130 years, but the transition from paper-based 2D drawings to the digital, 3D-model-based environment is much, much newer than that – and still evolving. It’s a significant change to the way the shipbuilding industry – and every industry – does business.
Dennis S. Jarabak of Huntington Ingalls Industries – Newport News Shipbuilding returns to the 3D Collaboration and Interoperability Congress (3D CIC) on October 25 & 26, 2016, to present about Newport News Shipbuilding’s transition to a digital environment for aircraft carrier design and construction.
Presentation Title: Model-Based Shipbuilding: Aircraft Carrier Design and Construction in a Model-Based World
Abstract: This project seeks to explore and evaluate a number of discreet shipbuilding enterprise processes that are fundamental to and exist in foundational support of much of the detailed work required in ship design and construction. A fully digital shipbuilding environment offers many efficiency and cost saving benefits to the shipbuilder but also introduces significant change to the way we do business. This paradigm change creates a production user acceptance risk which must be mitigated during the transition from a paper-based to an electronically-based digital environment. A major component in the transition from a paper based environment to a digital environment is the elimination of the long-standing 2D drawing which is used as the design disclosure configuration management based standard. This presentation will update the MBE community on the status of activities conducted through this 3 year research project.
