When you get right down to it, Model-Based Definition (MBD) is all about communication. The annotated model with product and manufacturing information (PMI) as the single source of truth communicates the information required for manufacturing. The model communicates with engineers at Design Company ABC, numerous folks from Supplier A to Supplier Z, the production tem at Manufacturer XYZ, and more. Multiple organizations, departments, and locations collaborating and communicating as a Model-Based Enterprise (MBE) towards common goals.
An example of this collaboration is the joint work of Sandia National Laboratories and Kansas City National Security Campus, both federated organizations. Co-presenting about Model-Based Enterprise (MBE) in federated organizations at the 3D Collaboration and Interoperability Congress (3D CIC) are Adrian Miura, Solutions Architect at Sandia National Laboratories, and Denise Welch, Sr. Systems Administrator, and Derek Ramsey, Mechanical Engineer, from the Kansas City National Security Campus, managed by Honeywell Federal Manufacturing & Technologies. 3D CIC will be held in Golden, Colorado on October 25 & 26, 2016.
Presentation Title: Charting the Path to a Model-Based Enterprise in a Federated Organization
Abstract: Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), part of the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE), have a unique relationship in which the lifecycle of products span multiple locations and companies. Due to the unique relationship, collaboration is necessary for a Model-Based Enterprise to be implemented by either entity. This joint presentation provides an overview of the NSE and the relationship between SNL, a design agency, and KCNSC, a production agency. We will cover challenges faced with a changing workforce, processes that have not been modernized in decades, and the heavily customized infrastructure supporting large amounts of legacy data.
In light of these challenges, the presentation will cover the collaboration between both agencies in preparation for a future transition to a MBE. Topics include SNL’s pilot of a CAD-driven part-centric Product Data Management (PDM) system to address the current drawing-based infrastructure, KCNSC’s annual Model Based Business Workshop used to educate employees about the benefits of a MBE, and ending with an overview of project MAP-R (Model Authorized Product Realization). Project MAP-R, an extension of NIST’s “Testing the Digital Thread in Support of Model-Based Manufacturing and Inspection” study, is designed to evaluate our ability to design, manufacture, inspect, and sell a part using a part-centric model-based method compared to our current drawing-centric drawing-based method. This study will generate quantifiable data which in turn will be used to define our road map to a MBE. The project is still in its early phases; however, we will present current data along with expected outcomes.
About the Presenters:
Adrian Miura is a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff (DMTS) at Sandia National Laboratories. He has developed or led the development of SNL product data management systems. Currently, Adrian is leading the SNL program to transition from a drawing-centric drawing-based method to a part-centric model-based product definition system.
Denise Welch has over 20 years of experience as CAD administrator at the Department of Energy’s Kansas City National Security Campus managed by Honeywell. In Denise’s current position as Sr. Systems Administrator, she is responsible for the administration of electrical and mechanical CAD applications and project leader for PDMLink. Denise is a key team member of KCNSC’s Model-Based Enterprise initiative. Denise holds a BA in Business Administration from Avila University.
Derek Ramsey is a mechanical engineer with three years of experience in design, product analysis using model-based solutions, and project management. In his current role at Honeywell FM&T, Derek is working to develop a framework to transition the company from drawing-based manufacturing to a model-based enterprise. To achieve this goal, Derek provides a wide range of MBE solutions, including product specification analysis, tolerance analysis, reverse engineering, and digital product quality analysis. Derek holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Kansas State University and will graduate with a Master of Business Administration from Rockhurst University in December of 2016.
