A Journey in Culture Change: From Engineered Drawings to Digital User-Centered Visual Instructions
Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) has begun a journey toward a full Digital Enterprise across all programs. NNS has been building ships with drawings for 130 years. With our transition to Siemens Teamcenter 9.x and NX 8.5 with 4th Generation Design (4GD), NNS started realizing the potential of using 4GD worksets in NX for manufacturing PMI and SAP VE for work instruction visualization to support assembly and manufacturing. The NNS journey is a “brown field” story about transitioning from paper work packages referencing drawings to providing a digital work instruction that provides “only what is needed to execute the work.”
This effort has expanded from a concept 3 years ago, to greater than a thousand electronic work instructions executed, to the declaration of the next Aircraft Carrier, Enterprise (CVN80), to be drawingless. It has been a challenging journey, both technically and culturally, impacting every aspect of our current business model. This brief will give a snapshot of our journey, lessons learned, and opportunities that presented themselves because of our focus on the workers’ point of view.

3D CIC + QIF Symposium
The 3D Collaboration & Interoperability Congress featuring the Quality Information Symposium focuses on 3D CAD collaboration and interoperability for the entire product lifecycle. With the 2017 theme of UNITE: Engineering & Shop Floor Collaboration, real users share their experiences with turning design concepts into manufacturing product reality using 3D models. The joint 3D CIC and QIF Symposium event will be held October 3-5, 2017 at the American Mountaineering Center in Golden, Colorado. Find out more and register for 3D CIC + QIF Symposium at 3dcic.com.
