Title: Leveraging 3D Data: How Adopting Model-Based Definition (MBD) Based on Standards & Interoperability Changes Product Lifecycle
Key takeaways
- MBD impact on core capabilities
- How we are continuing to lead the U.S. Naval shipbuilding industry
Business impact
- Improve data exchange by establishing standards and eliminating rework by up to 70%.
Description
This presentation will illustrate the process on how HII-Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS), in partnership with Action Engineering, LLC, has approached applying Model-Based Definition (MBD); the process of defining product & engineering data within a 3D CAD model which creates a single source of truth used in downstream manufacturing, inspection, and assembly processes, on a digitally designed shipbuilding program.
We will discuss the use-cases and pilot work we have performed; in our NX test environment, which demonstrates the application of MBD for adoption on a new digital ship design program. We will provide the results of our MBD modeling activities related to the application, testing, and validation of standards for component and assembly-based products, as well as their impact on program adoption. We will present how MBD-based pilot models support NNS’s goal to develop a well-defined framework with a set of model-based standards for application on a new shipbuilding program. The impact; on core capabilities, from developing a strong program wide MBD plan will include:
· Data governance & integrity
· Cross-functional collaboration
· Requirements traceability & compliance
· Digital thread process and culture transformation
Our presentation describes how well-defined use-cases and 3D pilot models can demonstrate the application and value of MBD standards. The MBD piloting process ensures we meet program goals for efficient data development, management, and exchange of engineering, planning, manufacturing, and operational activities for a new digitally-designed program.
We will to speak on how we are continuing to lead the U.S. Naval shipbuilding industry by:
· Supporting, harmonizing, and developing Model-Based Definition standards that support complex, assembly-based products
· Collaborating with partner shipyards, academic laboratories, and consultants to form an overarching governance council for new shipbuilding programs
The goal of this presentation is to socialize our framework for the application of Model-Based Definition standards, solicit industry expert opinion, and continue to support the industry standards community as we progress toward our goal of enabling a digitally superior product for U.S. Naval warships.
